School is about to Begin!!!!!

Travelling out of Antigua we hit road construction….so the traffic turned

around and went on another highway…..we were going the wrong way on a 2

lane highway….luckily we were behind the bus!

Yes, that car is coming toward us and yes, we are following the bus

to make a left hand turn off of this highway onto another one….

Oh, the joys of driving here!

It was cold this morning and Agua volcano has a togue on to keep warm!

Bandito Miguel met us at the house in La Canoa,

he was weeding and it was very dusty….

Francisco would not let go of his crayons…..

Raul, Oscar and Miguel enjoyed their school supplies,

toothbrushes and toothpaste…

Cleaning up the corn field……

A new family we met in La Canoa….

Vilma, Daniel and Angelica are eager to go to school next week.

Maria (4) will have to stay home with mom…..

Heading back to Tululche’…..

In Tululche’ we met a mom and her children….

this little guy is one month….

…and his big sister…

Would you like a salad?

We are often amazed at the beautiful fields of vegetables in Tululche’.

And yet there are so many families that have so little or nothing to eat.

The land is owned by people not from the village and the farm workers are not

allowed to take the produce home….it is strictly for market.

Guatemala City –  More than 2,000 children under 5 died in Guatemala during the first 10 months of 2010 as a consequence of illnesses caused by malnutrition, according to a report presented Friday by the national ombud’s office.

The report is based on statistics of the Epidemiology Center of the Public Health Ministry covering the period from Jan. 1-Oct. 31, 2010.

“It’s worrying that mortality from hunger is double that of deaths from violence. Thousands of children are estimated to be at risk and there is no sufficient effort being made to save them from this grave situation,” ombud Sergio Morales told the media. Fox News and Prensa Libre newspaper
